Objective
Obtain a temporary import permit for your car or motorcycle to come into Mexico.
Services Commitments
Permit duration
- Mexicans residents abroad or Mexicans working abroad for more than a year (should present evidence/official documents) : 180 days in a period of 12 months,
- Foreigners: The duration of the permit will be the same as the tourist visa

Before you leave Mexico, don’t forget to cancel the permit at the CITEV counters.
Citizen obligations
- Fulfill the requirements of this document.
- Do not commit any crime or offense while the vehicle is in Mexico.
- Do not use the vehicle for comercial porpouses or public transportation.
- Do not sell the vehicle.
- Register the return the vehicle before the permit expires.
Warning: Be aware that Mexico Tax Administration Service can seize the vehicle if you don’t register the return on time or if you drive the vehicle with an expired permit.
Proceadure requirements
1. Mexicans and Foreigners:- Be Mexican with legal residence abroad
- Be Mexican working abroad for more than a year (should present official documents)
- Be Foreigner with immigrant, non immigrant or lease activities, status/visa; except refugees and politic aisles.
If the permit is requested by Internet and you have a tourist status/visa you should have:
2. A signed return commitment letter.3. Be the legal owner of the vehicle.4. Present the following documents:- If you are Mexican or legal resident:
- Resident Alien
- Working permit
- Naturalization certificate (in case of double nationality)
- Passport
- Valid ID with picture and signature
- If you are a foreigner:
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- Vote Registration
- Naturalization certificate (issued by the US Department of Justice)
- Migratory status documentation
- Valid ID with picture and signature
Important: If you request a permit by Internet, you need to send a copy of all the above mentionated documents to the following address:
itvnet@banjercito.com.mx (Javascript is required to run the program. The web site is protected against spam) or you can send them by certified mail or present them at the mail boxes located at CITEV counters.
- To import your own vehicle: Present the property title or registration.
- Note: Plates endorsements are not accepted, only title or invoice endorsements.
- In case of financing: Present contract or bill of sale, issued by the financial company.
- In case of leasing: Present lease contract with the importer’s name, including VIN or serial number, and a temporary import authorization letter issued by the lease company.
- To import vehicles property of companies: Present documentation proving a labor relation with the importer.
- To import a vehicle property of your spouse, descendants, parents or forebears: Present documentation proving the family relationship, such as the birth or marriage certificate.
Note: In case of female importers who changed their last name (because of marriage) must present official documentation proving to be descendant of a specific person. - To import towed motorcycles (2, 3 and 4 wheels), wave runners and others: Prove the property of the units and register the units in the vehicle temporary import permit (3 units maximum are allowed per vehicle)
5. Pay with credit or debit card (with the importer name printed) VISA and Mastercard.6. Register the return the vehicle at the CITEV counters.Cost of the permit
By Internet the cost is $48 USD plus tax
At Mexican Consulates the cost is $40 USD plus tax
At CITEV counters the cost is $32 USD plus tax
If you are not able to pay with credit or debit card, you can pay at the CITEV counters in cash, however a $200 to $400 USD (depends on the particulars of the vehicle) deposit should be done, which will be refunded once the register of the returned vehicle is completed.
